Light the bones of the house before anything else — columns, entryway, texture walls. Uplights grazing stone or stucco create the drama everything else builds on.

Don't just light the house — accent the beds and plants in front of it too. A lit foreground against a lit facade gives the scene depth instead of a flat wall of light.
Small shrubs, topiaries, or pots sitting against a wall don't need their own light. Light the wall behind them and let them stand as dark silhouettes — instant depth, and the architecture does the work.
A downlight mounted high in an oak or palm casts soft moonlight through the branches — leaf shadows dancing on the ground, and the path below lit beautifully with zero hardware in the way. We call it moonlighting, and it beats a row of path lights every time there's a tree to work with.
A path light should reveal something — flowers and low plantings that vanish at night, or a long dark walkway with no tree to downlight from. Set them back in the bed, away from the grass line, where mowers and trimmers can't reach them. A few that earn their spot beat a runway any night.
Not the big, bright cage lights that stare you in the eyes — up-and-down sconces that graze the screen posts, with soft ambient light around the pool deck where safety needs it.
