Lighting a Naples dock you would actually walk at night

A private bayfront residence in Naples where the walk from the terrace to the boat lift crosses three changes of level and open water, lit with marine-grade fixtures, green light under the dock, and nothing at all aimed across the basin.
The problem
The route from the house to the water on this property is not a path. It is a stepped terrace down to a seawall, a boulder retaining wall, a turn onto a hardwood deck, and then a long dock out to a boat lift with open water on one side and moored boats on the other.
In daylight that reads as one continuous walk. After dark it is three separate places where the ground changes height, next to a drop into a basin. A single bright fixture at the top of the steps does not solve it. It makes it worse, because now everything past the fixture is a silhouette.
The constraints
What this site made hard, and why it changed the design.
- Salt air is the whole material specification.
- Everything within reach of spray is marine-grade brass. Ordinary fixtures on a Southwest Florida dock are not a maintenance question, they are a replacement schedule.
- Every neighbour across the basin is in the audience.
- This dock faces homes and mid-rise buildings directly opposite, across open water at eye level. Water reflects, so a fixture with a visible source is not seen once, it is seen twice, by everyone on the far bank. That single condition rules out most of what would be easy here.
- There is nowhere to put a stake.
- No planting bed runs alongside a dock. Every fixture on the waterfront half of this property mounts to something structural: a riser face, a piling, a deck board, or the seawall itself. The mounting decision comes before the aiming decision.
- Underwater is a separate trade.
- A fixture rated for continuous submersion in brackish water is not a landscape fixture that happens to be waterproof.
The approach
Every riser gets its own light.
Not one fixture washing a flight of steps from above, which throws a shadow onto the tread you are about to stand on. A recessed light in each riser, shielded so the source never enters the eye line, lighting the surface immediately below it. Both flights on this property are built this way, so the steps read as steps from the top and from the bottom.
The dock walk is lit from the pilings, downward.
The pilings were already there and already vertical, so they carry shielded downlights that put light on the deck boards and nothing above knee height. From a boat, or from across the basin, the dock is a lit surface with no visible fixtures on it.
Green goes under the water, warm stays on the land.
The under-dock fixtures run green on purpose. Warm white on brackish water reads as a dirty film on the surface. Green travels through it and shows the pilings, the lift and the depth underneath. This is the one place on a residential property where the 3000K warm-white standard is deliberately set aside, and the split is clean: everything you walk on is warm, everything under the surface is green.
The retaining wall is grazed, not lit.
The boulder wall between the terrace and the deck takes low warm light across its face, which gives the whole walk a lit edge on the land side without adding another point source anyone has to look at.
The result
The walk from the terrace to the boat lift is continuous after dark, with a light on every riser and a lit deck the whole way out. The basin keeps its depth instead of going flat black at the seawall.
From the house, and from every property across the water, what is visible is the deck, the steps and the water, and not a single bulb.

Why is dock lighting green or blue instead of warm white?
Warm white on brackish water reads as a dirty film across the surface. Green and blue travel through Southwest Florida water and show the pilings, the lift and the depth underneath, which is the thing a waterfront owner actually wants to see. On the walking surfaces above the water we stay at the 3000K warm white used across the rest of the property.
What makes a dock fixture different from a landscape fixture?
Salt spray. Fixtures within reach of it are marine-grade brass, and anything below the waterline has to be rated for continuous submersion rather than for occasional wetting. There is also nowhere to stake a fixture on a dock, so everything mounts to a riser face, a piling, a deck board or the seawall.
Will dock lighting glare across the water at my neighbours?
It does if the source is visible, because water reflects and the fixture gets seen twice. We light dock decking from shielded downlights mounted on the pilings and recess step lights into the risers, so the surfaces are lit and the sources are not in anyone's eye line, on either bank.
